May 1 in International Workers’ Day

Dear HCAFA members,

In celebration of May Day this year, HCAFA is asking our members to WEAR RED during the week of May 1-5. If asked before or after class time, tell your students about the importance of Unions for all workers.

This is how child labor laws were begun, how safety at work got started and how the rights of all workers are guaranteed. Unions set the standards for all workers and changed the laws so all are protected.

May 1 is International Workers’ Day.

If you would like to share the historical information, May 1, 1886 was the first May Day when thousands of workers across the U.S. walked off their jobs in support of the new concept of the eight-hour workday. Chicago was the epicenter of the movement which culminated in the infamous Haymarket Square Massacre.  If it were not for the union movement then and now, the eight-hour workday, the five-day work week, minimum wage — and, indeed the middle class — would not exist in this country.

Thank you for educating our students and others about the importance of unions.

The 2015 – 2021 Adjunct Faculty Teachers, Librarians, and Counselors Contract Is Now Available on This Website

The contract for all adjunct faculty at Harper has finally been proofed and can be accessed on this website.  Full members of HCAFA will receive hard copies as soon as they are available.  If you don’t receive one, check to make sure that you are a full member (only $15 a semester more than partial membership, fair share membership).   We have discovered recently that some of our members had assumed they were full members when in fact they were only fair share members.)

To see the contract, click on the Documents tab and then scroll down to contracts.  Click on 2016 – 2021 Contract for Adjunct Faculty Teachers, Librarians, and Counselors.

Call for Nominations for HCAFA Officers and Representatives

NOTICE OF LOCAL ELECTION for HCAFA 2017 – 2019

Election of officers for the Harper College Adjunct Faculty Association will be held on Friday, April 21 in room L-219 on campus from 12 noon – 2pm.  Details of the election are on the attached document.

Our Executive Committee solicits your help!  Several of our long-serving members are retiring this year and volunteers are needed for those positions.  Please consider serving as treasurer, secretary, or membership records chair.  Department representatives serve on the Executive Committee as liaisons for their area.  While candidates are encouraged from all departments, we have a need for persons in the liberal arts and business/social science departments.  The time commitments are minimal; the rewards are immense.

Executive Committee meetings are always open to dues-paying members and we look forward to hearing from our membership.  Increased membership and involvement make a better teaching and learning environment for all!

HCAFA Members, please nominate yourself or another HCAFA member for one of the HCAFA Executive Committee positions–officers and division representatives.

All nominations must be received by Friday, April 14, at 1:00.

Congratulations HCAFA and Harper College!

Good news Harper adjuncts! You voted to ratify the proposed negotiated contract. Our President, Charmian Tashjian, spoke to the Harper Board of Trustees at their February 15th board meeting. The last step in the process of the new contract is a final proofreading to combine the changes with the remainder of the old contract. When the proofreading is complete the contract will be posted on this website and copies will be printed. Look for  e-newsbriefs and a newsletter in the near future.
