About

HCAFA represents about 500 adjuncts at Harper College.  Collectively, we are strong and are able to use our voice to get better working conditions, wages, and respect.

HCAFA members are welcome to attend the meeting of our Executive Committee.  See the schedule in the column to the left.  See the “Contact” tab to the right of the home page to get in touch with our local leadership.

There are many opportunities for involvement whether that is working on a local, regional, or even national level.  We welcome everyone who wants to become involved in any way to support our organization.

Joining HCAFA is an important way to support the efforts we have made on behalf of all adjuncts at Harper College.  Our contracts bring important benefits beyond salary and typical working conditions.  Over the years our protection of rights through the communication and grievance processes have enriched our teaching environment and enhanced our students’ learning opportunities.

Joining HCAFA is a simple matter of filling out a brief form and returning it to Janice Cutler, the HCAFA membership records person.  The membership form is at our website under the “join” tab.  When an adjunct becomes eligible for membership at the start of their fourth consecutive semester of teaching at least three hours per semester, you will receive a packet from us.  If you don’t, please email Janice at hcafamembership@gmail.com or send her a note in the math department through campus mail.

Membership includes that in HCAFA, the Illinois Education Association, and the National Education Association.  Dues payment is through payroll deduction during the semester.

We are only as strong as our members.  Join us!  Get involved in your local professional association! Our current contract expires at the beginning of the 2021-2022 academic year.  Negotiations on our collective welfare are typically complicated and are increasingly difficult because of the many unique characteristics of being an adjunct.  It’s especially critical at this time to show a united front!
