Want to become involved in HCAFA, your union?! Don’t want to commit to a lot? How about one 2-hour meeting a month? We are looking for three adjuncts to attend Region meetings. HCAFA is part of Region 42 which is our IEA area. In our Region is also the Palatine K-8 teachers, bus drivers, Harper Adjuncts, Harper custodial/maintenance, and ESPs. Meetings are interesting, fun, and there are often guests from IEA or other Regions giving presentations on various aspects of IEA and political issues. Write up a quick report of what was said, give it and any handouts to one of the executive committee, and that’s it!
We are allowed to have 3 people on the region council so you won’t be alone! If you are interested, please send an email of intent to Taimi Wilk, our elections chair, at taimiwilk@comcast.net
or drop a letter of intent in the mail to:
Taimi Wilk
c/o HCAFA
IEANEA Office
553 N. North Court, Suite 210
Palatine IL 60067
In your email or note you should include your contact information as well as a short statement of why you are interested. We must have your notification of intent to run for region council by August 1st!!!!! This is an elected position as per IEA rules!
On August 13th, at the regularly scheduled Executive Committee meeting (1-3pm at the Palatine office at the address above), we’ll be voting on who will be our representatives. Our Executive Committee meetings are open to all so please stop by and vote!

Some pictures from the NEA-RA 2010. Overall, I learned a lot and I would do it again! Maybe a little bit interested? Next year, the RA is in Chicago. You wouldn’t have to travel far! Seriously though, if you have been thinking about wanting to be more involved, attending the RA as either a delegate or a volunteer is a great way to meet people and see what educational unionism is all about.

Bonjour from Nawlins! My apologies for not posting earlier. The internet situation here is pretty bad. The RA is in full session today with some 60 new business items to discuss and vote on, as well as voting on the budget. Continue reading

Contingent faculty are made up of any higher education faculty group that doesn’t have tenure which includes adjuncts, one year assignments, etc. Check out the article. It’s a very interesting read!

A message from HCAFA President Ilona Sala,
Adjunct Colleagues,
This summer, as the last newsletter, said the Illinois Education Association is offering the Summer Leadership Academy. Ordinarily, this academy would be interesting for those already active in HCAFA. However, it is crucial that some of you who have thought of becoming active seriously consider going to this summer’s academy. The next few years are extremely important in our leadership and particularly because 2011-2012 are negotiation years. One does not just step into those roles. The training and preparation are important.
It is the nature of higher ed that its members are older; that is positive because it brings experience, discipline, and steadfastness. However, an organization also needs youth’s stamina and dreams. We know our adjuncts are busy, but it’s time to take small parts in a fast growing union. What you learn from this academy can help in so many ways. Take a look at the agenda; it promises to inform and even lead to personal growth. After all negotiating skills can be used anywhere.
The academy is paid for, so participants do not incur any expenses. Go to the IEA website to view all the courses, let Ilona Sala, Janice Cutler, Charmian Tashjian, or Amy Kunz know if you are interested in going.

Do not forget that your Harper Faculty ID will get you into museums in Chicago for free or at a lower cost. You should also bring your union ID, that you get at the beginning of each school year, to prove that you are indeed a faculty member.
